Thatch Repairs

When you choose KS Thatchers you can be assured that all your thatching requirements will be taken care of by a company that acts with integrity and gives you the best value for money.

This is the way we will work on your property

  1. We carry out a survey of your property to assess the condition of thatch

  2. We give advice on the type of thatch best suited to your property.

  3. We can also carry out any roof carpentry needed together with chimney rebuilding and repairing.

  4. We strongly advise that if you have a wood-burning stove with a lined chimney you have the brickwork re-pointed with lime mortar and a protective barrier installed between the thatch and the chimney.

  5. We send you an estimate, including VAT, together with a detailed schedule of the work we will undertake.

  6. We arrange for scaffolding to be erected by the specialist company we have used for many years

  7. We remove the old thatch. In keeping with our organic ethos, this is used as bedding for cows.

  8. The wheat straw is delivered and bundled by machine on the ground.

  9. Thatching begins from the bottom, just like tiling.

  10. The teamwork from left to right, fixing and dressing as we go.

  11. Ensuring the continuity of traditional crafts, locally sourced hazel spars are used to fix the bundles. Although plastic spars are less expensive and are becoming increasingly popular, we prefer the more aesthetically pleasing and higher quality of hazel.

  12. We work toward the ridge, which is strengthened and create the pattern you have chosen, scallops, diamonds or traditional.

  13. We use fire retardants to ensure your property is sufficiently protected

  14. Finally, we wire the thatch.

We clear the site and leave you to enjoy your home, safe and secure under a superb thatch.

See you in 30 years!

Many thanks for the work. It looks really good and I would not hesitate to recommend you if I hear of anyone else needing work done.
